uShip is one of the best-known marketplaces where pet owners find someone to move their pet. The owner posts a listing, transporters send quotes, and the owner picks one. According to uShip's own blog, more than 54,000 pets have been transported through its marketplace since it launched in 2004.

For small pet transport businesses, that makes uShip a steady source of leads, but not an open door. Pet listings have their own bidding requirements, owners compare transporters closely, and a growing share of jobs involve more than a drive: a destination state's rules, an airport handover, or a pet flying on abroad. This guide covers how uShip pet transport works for transporters, what you need to bid, how to win listings, and how to avoid failed deliveries.

How uShip pet transport works for transporters

  1. The owner creates a listing describing the pet, the pickup and drop-off points, and the dates.

  2. Transporters submit competing quotes and can message the owner with questions.

  3. The owner reviews profiles, reviews and quotes, then selects and books one transporter.

The owner is choosing a person as much as a price. Everything on your profile, from credentials to how you describe a typical trip, feeds that decision.

What you need to bid on pet listings

Only experienced transporters can bid on pet listings. In its post "New Transporter Requirements Make Pet Shipping Even Safer on uShip" (uShip blog), uShip says it asks for proof of past pet shipping experience through references such as:

  • A validated business website.

  • Reviews on Facebook or Yelp.

  • A Better Business Bureau rating.

  • A USDA licence.

Transporters also have to read and agree to uShip's Best Practices for Pet Shipping, and uShip asks that vehicles have proper air conditioning. The post is undated, so check uShip's current requirements before you apply.

USDA registration

Under the Animal Welfare Act, transporting animals for hire generally requires registration with USDA as a carrier. Marketplaces are now enforcing it. CitizenShipper has required USDA Class T registration from all pet transporters on its platform since 22 April 2026 (CitizenShipper help centre). If you work across platforms, get registered before you need it.

How to win pet listings

Profiles that win pet jobs tend to do the same things well:

  • Lead with credentials. Successful transporter bios on uShip open with their USDA licence and explain that it's what lets them operate legally and stay insured.

  • Explain exactly how the pet travels. Climate-controlled vehicle, crates provided or not, how often you stop (every 2 to 4 hours is a common promise), and whether other pets share the route.

  • Show what the price covers. Fuel, tolls, supplies, cleaning and insurance. Explaining it makes a higher quote easier to accept.

  • Describe your animal experience. Shelter, rescue, grooming or veterinary work all count.

  • Answer fast and ask good questions. Ask about the pet's temperament, medication, diet and any travel history.

  • Deliver updates during the trip. Photos and location updates are what owners remember in reviews.

  • Ask for a review after every job. Reviews are your strongest ranking factor with owners.

Use your uShip reviews and USDA registration on your own website too, so owners who search for your name find the same evidence.

Avoid failed deliveries: know the route rules before you quote

The most expensive mistake on a pet listing is accepting a job that can't be completed as booked. Three situations come up often.

The pet is flying on after your drive. If you're delivering to an airport, the pet's flight has its own rules. Pet Holiday Club's rules base advises arriving at least 4 hours before departure for pets flying in cargo on international flights. Arrive late and the pet misses the flight.

The airline won't take the breed. Our rules base holds 1,076 forbidden-breed entries across carriers. Snub-nosed breeds in particular face severe restrictions or outright embargoes on many airlines, as our Turkish Airlines pet policy guide shows for brachycephalic breeds. Ask the breed before quoting an airport run.

The documents don't match the pet. On international routes, a microchip number that doesn't match the documents, or can't be read, can invalidate them all. On the US to UAE route, for example, that can lead to denial of entry, quarantine or return at the owner's expense. Scan the microchip at pickup and compare it with the paperwork.

Pet Holiday Club builds a checklist for each route from our rules base of 1,661 requirement items across 238 countries and 131 airlines. It's matched to origin, destination, species, breed and airline, set out in journey order, with lead times counted back from the travel date. Owners upload the pet's documents, and the scanner flags gaps before the trip.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can anyone transport pets on uShip?

No. uShip only lets transporters who can show past pet shipping experience bid on pet listings, using references such as a business website, reviews, a BBB rating and a USDA licence.

Do I need a USDA licence to transport pets on uShip?

uShip lists a USDA licence among the proofs it accepts. Under the Animal Welfare Act, transporting animals for hire generally requires USDA registration as a carrier, so get registered regardless of platform.

How do I stand out from other transporters on uShip?

Lead with your credentials, explain how the pet travels and what your price covers, answer questions quickly, and build reviews with updates during each trip.

Should I take airport runs for pets flying abroad?

Yes, if you check the flight's requirements first: the arrival time at the airport, the airline's breed rules, and whether the pet's documents match its microchip.

Are there alternatives to uShip for pet transport jobs?

Yes. CitizenShipper and GoGoPets also connect owners with pet transporters, and both now check USDA registration.
