Pet Friendly Hotels in San Diego (2026)

The short answer
The most pet friendly hotels in San Diego are the Kimpton properties downtown: no pet fee, no weight limit, and cats as welcome as dogs. If you want the beach, Hotel del Coronado and Loews Coronado Bay take dogs and cats up to 40 lb for a one-time fee, and both sit a short drive or walk from an off-leash dog beach.
San Diego is one of the easiest US cities to visit with a pet. Fees here are usually charged once per stay, not per night, which is the opposite of Las Vegas. The catches are weight limits (40 lb is common), breed lists at a few resorts, and beach rules that change by city and by season.
Policies below were checked in October 2026. Hotels change fees without notice, so confirm the pet policy in writing when you book, and add your pet to the reservation rather than announcing it at check-in.
7 pet friendly hotels in San Diego, compared
Kimpton is the only group here with no fee and no weight limit. Everyone else caps size, charges once per stay, or takes dogs only.

Kimpton Alma, Palomar and Solamar: best for no fees
Kimpton's pet program has no fee, no weight cap and no head count, and it covers cats as well as dogs. Kimpton Alma also states no breed restrictions. All three are downtown, so plan relief walks on city sidewalks rather than a lawn. Reviewers at Kimpton properties report walking a couple of blocks to the nearest patch of grass.
Hotel del Coronado: best for a beach stay
The Del takes up to two dogs or cats of 40 lb or less. It charges a one-time cleaning fee: published as $125 to $150 for main-building rooms and $200 in Beach Village or Shore House. Rates vary by source, so confirm at booking.
The hard stop is breed. The Del does not accept pit bulls, pit bull mixes, Dobermans, Rottweilers, Chows or Chow mixes, and asks for your pet's breed and weight when you book. Pets stay out of pools, the spa, the gym and indoor dining, but are allowed on the Sun Deck. Coronado's off-leash Dog Beach is about a 20-minute walk.
Loews Coronado Bay: best for two pets on the coast
Loews takes two pets, dogs or cats, up to 40 lb each, for $150 per stay. It is on the Silver Strand, a quieter stretch south of the Del, so Coronado Dog Beach is a drive rather than a walk.
Pendry San Diego: best luxury option for big dogs
Pendry has no published weight limit and takes two dogs for $100 per stay, with beds, bowls and treats supplied. If your dog is over 40 lb and you want a high-end stay, this is the clearest fit downtown.
Manchester Grand Hyatt: dogs only, on the bay
The Hyatt charges $100 per room for stays up to six nights and takes dogs only. Its location on the waterfront walk makes leashed walks easy. Cat owners should book a Kimpton instead; for chain-by-chain cat rules see our cat-friendly hotels guide.

Off-leash dog beaches near these hotels
San Diego has four beaches where dogs can run off leash; on most other city beaches dogs are leash-only and restricted by time of day.
Beach | Nearest hotels above | Off-leash rules |
|---|---|---|
Downtown Kimptons, Pendry, Hyatt | 24 hours, year-round | |
Hotel del Coronado, Loews | Year-round; leash on until you reach the beach | |
Downtown, Mission Bay | Leash-optional in posted hours; parts of the shore close to dogs in spring and summer | |
North County day trip | Off leash 15 Sept to 15 June only; leash required in summer |
Ocean Beach Dog Beach has no restrooms or wash-down, so pack water and a towel before you drive back to a downtown hotel. On city beaches such as La Jolla, Pacific Beach and Mission Beach, leashed dogs are allowed only in the evening; check the posted hours at the entrance.
Coming from abroad or from Mexico? Sort entry before the hotel
A pet friendly hotel booking is worthless if your dog is refused at the border. San Diego sits on the Mexico crossing, so many visitors arrive from Tijuana or fly in from overseas. The rules below come from the Pet Holiday Club rules base for a dog travelling Mexico → USA.
Would stop the trip
Dogs younger than 6 months cannot enter or return to the United States (CDC).
Medical work, in this order
ISO 11784/11785 microchip, 15 digits, implanted before or on the day of the rabies shot.
Rabies vaccination after the microchip, at least 30 days before travel. A first shot after chipping counts as a primary vaccination and is valid for one year only.
DHPP vaccination, at least 30 days before travelling.
Parasite treatment within 10 days of travel.
Papers to carry
A CDC Dog Import Form receipt for every dog, submitted before arrival. If your dog has only been in dog-rabies-free or low-risk countries for the past 6 months, this receipt is the only CDC document required.
Leaving Mexico: a health certificate from an authorised Mexican vet, then the SENASICA export certificate (CZE). SENASICA delivers it within three business days of filing, and you need your full US address, so put the hotel's address on the application.
Rules differ if your dog has been in a high-risk rabies country. Build the exact checklist for your route, species and airline in Pet Holiday Club, and read What are the requirements to bring a dog to the USA in 2026? for the full CDC rules.
