The quick answer

The hotel chains that take dogs at almost every property are Kimpton, Motel 6, Red Roof, La Quinta, Loews and, in the UK, Travelodge. Kimpton and Motel 6 charge nothing at all. Most other chains charge 50–150 (or £10–£25) per stay, and set the rules hotel by hotel.

Hotel chains that take dogs, compared

Only four of these 13 chains take dogs at every hotel: Kimpton, Motel 6, Loews and Travelodge in the UK. At the rest, each hotel decides, so the fee and weight limit below are what you'll see at most of their hotels, not a promise.

Fees were checked on 30 September 2026 and change often. Assistance dogs stay free at every chain here, and emotional support animals are charged as pets.

Why the same chain can say yes in one city and no in the next

Most big hotel brands don't own their hotels. Owners and franchisees run them, and each one sets its own pet rules. That's why a Hilton or a Marriott can take a 70 lb dog in one city and refuse any dog a few miles away.

The chains in this guide fall into three groups:

  • One policy everywhere: Kimpton, Motel 6, Loews and Travelodge. You can book any of their hotels and know your dog is welcome, although fees still vary at Loews.

  • A brand standard that most hotels follow: Red Roof, La Quinta, Hyatt and Best Western publish standard rules, but a hotel can still opt out or charge more.

  • Hotel by hotel: Hilton, Marriott, Accor and Four Seasons. Some of their brands are very dog-friendly, but you must check each hotel.

In Europe, dogs are welcome at hotels more often than in the US, but fees are usually charged per night rather than per stay. Some countries also restrict certain breeds by law, such as XL Bullies in the UK and Category 1 and 2 dogs in France, and hotels there refuse them.

Each chain's dog policy in brief

Chains where dogs stay free or cheap

Kimpton is the most dog-friendly chain in the world. Every Kimpton takes pets of any size, weight and breed, with no fee and no deposit. Its hotels are upscale, but for a big dog the free policy often makes them cheaper overall.

Motel 6 lets two pets stay free at every hotel. Its sister brand Studio 6 usually charges about $10 a night, so check which one you are booking.

Red Roof takes one cat or dog free at most hotels, up to 80 lb each. A second pet costs $15 a night.

La Quinta takes two dogs or cats at most hotels, for $25 a night up to $75 per stay. It sets no weight limit brand-wide, but some hotels add one.

The big hotel groups

Hilton has no single pet policy, but Home2 Suites and Homewood Suites take pets at nearly every US hotel. Expect 50–150 per stay and a limit of around 75 lb.

Marriott leaves pet rules to each hotel. Residence Inn, TownePlace Suites and Element are the most reliable brands for dogs. Aloft and Element usually cap dogs at 40 lb.

Hyatt hotels that take dogs mostly follow one standard: $100 for 1–6 nights, $200 for 7–30 nights, and one dog up to 50 lb or two dogs up to 75 lb combined. Many Hyatt hotels take dogs only, not cats.

Best Western allows two dogs up to 80 lb at its pet-friendly hotels. US hotels can charge up to $30 a night, with a maximum of $150 a week.

Loews takes pets at every hotel, with a welcome gift and a pet room-service menu. Fees run from $50 to $200 per stay.

Four Seasons takes dogs at most of its hotels, and many charge nothing. Many hotels only take small dogs, so ask about weight.

UK and Europe

Travelodge is the UK's most reliable budget choice. It charges £25 per dog per stay, for up to two dogs, and you add the dog when you book.

Premier Inn is the UK chain to avoid with a dog. It doesn't accept pets at any of its hotels, only assistance dogs.

ibis, Novotel and Mercure, all part of Accor, take dogs at hundreds of hotels across Europe. ibis charges a small nightly fee. Novotel and Mercure usually charge €10–€25 a night. Dogs are allowed in the room and common areas, but not in restaurants or at the pool.

How to confirm a hotel takes dogs before you book

The chain's website tells you the brand standard. Only the hotel itself can tell you its actual rules, so check these five things for every booking:

  1. The hotel's own page. Look for "Pet policy" under the hotel's policies or FAQ, not the brand's home page. Booking sites often show old fees.

  2. The fee, and what it covers. Ask whether it is per night or per stay, per dog or per room, and whether there is a refundable deposit on top.

  3. Weight and number of dogs. Give your dog's actual weight. Ask whether a limit is per dog or combined for two.

  4. Breed rules. Some hotels refuse certain breeds, and some countries ban them by law.

  5. Room availability. Most hotels have only a few pet rooms. Add the dog to your booking, or call the hotel, so a pet room is held for you.

It's also worth asking whether your dog can stay alone in the room. Many hotels only allow it if your dog is crated, or not at all.

To skip most of this work, start with a place that states its rules up front. Pet Holiday Club's pet-friendly vacations lists hotels and vacation homes with the number of dogs, weight limit and fee shown on each listing, and whether pets stay free.

The bottom line

For a dog of any size and no fee, book a Kimpton. On a budget, choose Motel 6 or Red Roof in the US, Travelodge in the UK, or ibis in Europe. At Hilton, Marriott, Hyatt and Accor, check each hotel before you book.

For places that state their dog rules on every listing, browse Pet Holiday Club's pet-friendly vacations. If you're crossing a border with your dog, build a Pet Holiday Club checklist so the paperwork is ready too.
