Veterinary Clinic Reviews: How to Earn More and Respond Well

Why reviews matter more for vet clinics than most businesses

Pet owners choose a vet the way they'd choose a doctor for a family member. Before booking, many read what other owners say about how the team treated their pet, how clearly costs were explained, and how the clinic handled a hard day.

That makes veterinary clinic reviews a front door. A steady flow of recent, specific reviews tells new clients the clinic is active and trusted. A few unanswered complaints can outweigh dozens of quiet happy clients.

This guide covers how to earn more reviews within the FTC's rules, how to respond (especially to negative ones), and how to prevent the complaints that didn't need to happen.

How to earn more reviews

Most happy clients never think to leave a review. Asking, at the right moment and in the right way, is usually enough.

  • Ask everyone, not just the happy ones. Send the same review request to all clients after a visit, automatically.

  • Time it well. A text or email within a day of a routine visit works best. Skip the request after euthanasia or a poor outcome, and send a personal note instead.

  • Make it one tap. Link straight to your review page in the request.

  • Train the front desk to mention it at checkout after a good visit: "If you have a minute, a review really helps us."

  • Thank reviewers publicly. Replies show future clients someone is listening.

Stay within the FTC's rule on consumer reviews, in force since October 2024. The FTC's final rule prohibits:

  • Fake reviews, including AI-generated ones or reviews from people who never used the clinic.

  • Incentives tied to sentiment. No discounts or gifts in exchange for a positive (or negative) review.

  • Undisclosed insider reviews from staff or family without stating the connection.

  • Review suppression through threats, intimidation or false accusations, or presenting only positive reviews on your site as if they were all of them.

Penalties can reach $53,088 per violation. Asking every client, without conditions, is the safe approach.

How to respond to reviews

Positive reviews: thank them, mention something specific if you can do so without sharing private details, and keep it short.

Negative reviews take more care, because the most natural reply (explaining what really happened) can expose client and patient details. Many state veterinary practice acts restrict sharing medical information without the owner's consent, so check your state's rules before replying.

A safe structure for negative reviews:

  1. Acknowledge the feeling without debating the facts: "We're sorry your visit felt rushed."

  2. Don't confirm details about the pet, diagnosis, treatment or bill.

  3. Take it offline: "Please call [practice manager] at [number] so we can talk it through."

  4. Keep it calm and short. Future clients read the reply more closely than the review.

  5. Fix the cause. If several reviews mention the same problem, it's a process issue, not a PR one.

If a review looks fake or breaks the platform's policy, report it through the platform. Don't threaten legal action over an honest negative review; the FTC rule prohibits groundless threats to remove reviews.

Prevent the avoidable complaints: travel certificates

Some negative reviews start long before the visit. A common one: an owner comes in days before a flight for a health certificate, only to learn a vaccine was given too late or a treatment is out of its window. The trip is delayed, and the clinic gets the blame.

The rules are strict. For dogs leaving the US for Italy or Costa Rica, Pet Holiday Club's rules base requires:

  • An ISO 15-digit microchip implanted before or on the same day as the rabies vaccination.

  • Rabies and DHPP vaccinations at least 30 days before travel.

  • Parasite treatment within 10 days of travel.

  • For Costa Rica, a clinical exam within the 2 weeks before travel.

The fix is setting expectations early. Pet Holiday Club gives owners a checklist for their exact route:

  • Built from a rules base of around 1,660 rules and matched to origin, destination, species, breed and airline.

  • With lead times against the travel date, so owners see when to book.

  • Checked against the pet's records. Owners upload documents and the scanner flags gaps.

Owners who know the timeline in advance don't arrive with a trip that can't be saved.

Can a vet clinic offer a discount for reviews?

Not in exchange for a review of a particular sentiment. The FTC rule prohibits incentives conditioned on positive or negative reviews. Asking every client, without an incentive, is the safe approach.

Should we respond to every review?

Ideally, yes. A short thank-you for positive reviews and a calm, private-detail-free reply to negative ones.

Can we remove a negative review?

Only through the platform's own process, for example if it's fake or breaks the platform's rules. Threatening a reviewer to get it removed is prohibited.

Can staff leave reviews for the clinic?

Only if they clearly disclose their connection to the clinic. Managers shouldn't ask staff or their families to post reviews.
